After just watching the film Constantine, I am forced to consider the hypothesis proposed by the story in this film. That God and Satan made a wager for all the souls of mankind, seems preposterous enough, but also that they are allowed to achieve such ends merely by influence and no direct action, sounds like the meddling of religious autocracy to me.
This raises all kinds of theological and philosophical questions doesn't it? That any evil that occurs is the work of the devil, and all good is the path of God (I can't help it but everytime I type the word God I instinctively use a capital G, the rules of punctuation aside, do I do this out of fear of his retribution? Or am I merely attached to the failing power of religious doctrine?)
I can't help but feel that the above 'characters' are no more than metaphors, created purely to rationalise human behaviour, to be able to punish those who act against what is commonly accepted and to reward those who conform to whatever 'rules' may exist. Let's face it, people in the world are far more religious than not and some people who believe in God affirm and bless almost everything from the most mundane of daily tasks to the biggest of life's decisions, with their very belief in said deity! They draw spiritual and emotional strength from it as if the reward of going to heaven is persuasion enough to live one's life accordingly.
The problem arises when people try to live their lives with the intention of getting into heaven and staying out of hell by adhering to the 'Ten Commandments' or the 'Koran' or whichever piece of religious literature they happen to be indoctrinated with or choose to learn from. Such things were written by man and are inevitably flawed and thus lead to great confusion. Hence the confusion of this man right here....
...On another note I had a full platter at Nando's today with my brother. Oooohwee that is some hot shit! And there was a hell of a lot of it too!
Peace
